Description Dutch New Guinea. 22 April 1944. Lockheed P38 Lightning aircraft of the US Army Air Force line up at captured Tadji airfield at Aitape. Standing at the nose of aircraft 004, United States General Walter Krueger, Commander US 6th Army (centre) talks with RAAF officers Air Commodore F. R. W. Scherger (right) and Wing Commander W. A. C. Dale about operating Australian and American aircraft from the airstrip. Within forty-two hours No. 62 Works Wing RAAF had this airfield ready for the Kittyhawks of No. 78 Fighter Wing RAAF after it had been taken from the Japanese during the Allied drive on Hollandia. Jeep 207113 and driver is at left and a grader moves in to repair in the middle.
