Captain Henry Oakley. Whaling Master, Who Saved 100 Lives 74 Years Ago, Dies at 93. (Special to The New York Times) Babylon, Long Island; January 10, 1929. Captain Henry Oakley, one of the last of the old-time whaling masters of Long Island, died here at the home of his niece, Mrs. O. R. Poock, today, the day after his ninety-third birthday. Captain Oakley was master of the whaler The Monmouth, which saved 100 lives from the British ship Meridian on September 5, 1854. For this he was decorated by a special act of the British Parliament. During the Civil War he commanded the U. S. sloop-of-war John Adams.
