Summary[edit]
DescriptionCapitol Theatre, 35-41 Bank Street, New London.jpg | The Capitol Theatre, at 35-41 Bank Street between Golden and State Streets in New London, Connecticut, was built as a vaudeville house in 1921 by Walter T. Murphy. It sat on the site of Abron Hall, a Greek Revival theatre, the style of which influenced the Palladian style of the Capitol. Designed by W. H. Lowe, the venue had a capacity of 1,730 and excellent acoustics. The interior was lush: the lobby featured a Venetian marble floor, the ceiling was a dome of Bohemian cut glass, and the proscenium was covered by a mural of cherubs and cupids. The theatre was in the top tier of the vaudeville circuits, presenting such entertainers as Al Jolson and Burns and Allen. After the death of vaudeville, the theatre became a movie house, and was closed in 1974 due to fire code violations. It has been vacant since, and the massive Palladian windows have been filled in with cement blocks. A promised renovation in 2010 never took place. (Sources: [1], [2], [3] and [4]) |
