Summary[edit]
DescriptionCanyon Junction Rockfall (6965198467).jpg | Rockfalls are very common in Zion, especially in winter. They are the result of a mechanical form of weathering known as frost wedging. As moisture fills the cracks found in the rock, freezing temperatures cause the water to expand, slowly widening these cracks overtime. Ultimately, this freeze-thaw cycle will produce a rockfall, sometimes of significant size. The rockfall pictured above occurred the morning of March 7, 2012. Crews began working immediately and the road was cleared a few hours after the fall had occurred. NPS Photo/Therese Picard |
