In con-sequence, this plant has introduced theunderground drive, which is becoming sopopular in wood working plants. In thisunderground scheme, practically the wholeshop where the machines are located, ischambered out to form a shallow basemem,in which are located the motors, shaft- which contain similar pts to those in theerecting simp, making \ pits in all in thecar department. This department, with anarea 176% by 150 ft., is the larger por-tion of the car department, and it is inthis department that the n.ajor portion ofthe car overhauling, consisting for themost part of repainting and generalbrightening up, is performed. The section of the shop to the west ofthe transfer table is used entirely for carbody work, and on account of the in-llammable nature of the material contain-ed, it is divided off from the rest of the^hop at the transfer table edge by a cor-rugated iron wall, as shown on the left infig. 4.
