res will beprofitable. A HOPEFUL WORD^rT HERE seems to be one thing that American T people do not realize, said Mr. Hoover, theUnited States Food Controller, that is that inAmerica corn comprises, either directly or indirectly,one-half of the food supply. For three months wehave been facing a shortage that practically amount-ed to a corn famine. This condition has been reflectedin the prices of meats, bread, milk and other com-modities. Now we have a record crop of three and aquarter billions of bushels that is just beginning tocome into the market. One difficulty has been thatthe corn crop is four weeks late and another is thatthe crop is soft and takes time for maturity. Thenon top of this is the car shortage, which makes theproblem hard to solve. By January 15 the corn crop should be movingfreely and at reasonable price. The real fundamen-tal economic relief is coming with the movement ofthe corn crop. February 8, 1918, C A N A 1) I A N GKOC K K Current Events in Photograph—No. 6
