Angkor Wat, built during the early years of the 12th century by Suryavaram II, honors the Hindu god Vishnu and is a symbolic representation of Hindu cosmology. Consisting of an enormous temple symbolizing the mythic Mt. Meru, its five inter-nested rectangular walls and moats represent chains of mountains and the cosmic ocean. Angkor was constructed out of sandstone that may have been quarried many miles away - possibly at Phnom Kulen - and transported to the construction site by the river. It is estimated that as much stone was used in building Angkor Wat as was used in the great pyramid of Khafre in Egypt. Cambodia |
