Summary[edit]

Description
English: Seen here are honey yellow calcite crystals over whitish stilbite crystals. The sample comes from an underground mine in Montana - the famous Stillwater Mine, which produces platinum and palladium. The platinum ores are very old, Precambrian rocks. The calcite and stilbite are late-stage, fracture-lining mineralization unrelated to the formation of those rocks. Calcite is calcium carbonate (CaCO3), a common mineral. Stilbite is hydrous sodium calcium aluminosilicate (NaCa2Al5Si13O36·14H2O), one of the zeolite minerals.

The grayish-colored matrix is the host rock, which is an altered norite having plagioclase feldspar (= gray), clay after plagioclase (= whitish gray), and an undetermined, dark greenish-colored mineral after bronzite pyroxene.

Geologic context: crystal-lined, open fracture in rocks of the Johns-Manville Reef, Troctolite-Anorthosite I zone, Lower Banded Series, Stillwater Complex, upper Neoarchean, 2.7 Ga

Locality: Stillwater Mine, southwest of the town of Nye, southwestern Stillwater County, Beartooth Mountains, southern Montana, USA
