Summary

[edit]
Description Caiman displaying the fourth lower tooth. The lower jaw is of a crocodile or caiman is the same width as its upper jaw, whereas an alligator's is narrower than its upper jaw. Thus in alligators the lower teeth generally sit inside the mouth when the jaw is close, but in crocodiles and caimans this fourth lower tooth sits outside in a constriction in the upper jaw. This is an easy to spot difference enabling one to distinguish between the species.
