Summary[edit]
DescriptionCaerbwdi stone, St David's cathedral - geograph.org.uk - 741366.jpg |
English: Caerbwdi stone, St David's cathedral. The west front of the cathedral was built using local sandstone from the sea quarries on the coast only a mile to the south. It comes in two colours, a greyish green and this unusual purple. Being soft it wears away quickly in the wet climate and the façade has needed repeated restoration. John Nash rebuilt it in the late C18 and Gilbert Scott a century later, both using the traditional stone. However early C20 repairs involved stone from elsewhere. When preparations were made to renovate again in 1996 the quarry at Caerbwdi, long closed, was reopened and enough stone removed for both immediate and future use.
See 621740 for the old quarries. |
