Summary[edit]
DescriptionCadillac Place, Detroit - 20201215.jpg |
English: Cadillac Place, 3044 West Grand Boulevard, Detroit, Michigan, December 2020. Much like the Fisher Building across the street, Cadillac Place is another Albert Kahn-designed National Historic Landmark in Detroit's New Center. Laid out in an unusual footprint featuring four identical pavilions connecting perpendicularly with a central spine and interspersed by deep recesses, Cadillac Place's architecture differs from that of the Fisher Building in that it's a resolute representation of Neoclassicism: the ground floor consists of a row of arcaded shop windows separated by Ionic columns (and Corinthian pilaster strips on the outermost side pavilions); there are cornices crowning the second and 13th floors (the former with a dentil row beneath), and the upper two floors are a colonnade of engaged Corinthian columns. Conceived as the new corporate headquarters of the General Motors Corporation, the building's construction began in 1919, was completed three years later, and - more than any other single factor - was the trigger responsible for launching the New Center into its new status as Detroit's satellite business district. It continued serving as GM's home offices until their move to the Renaissance Center in 2001, and now houses a mix of office (including several agencies of the Michigan state government) and retail tenants. It was nominated simultaneously to the National Register of Historic Places and as a National Historic Landmark in June 1978. |
