Summary[edit]

Description

The Coronation Stone is an ancient sarsen stone block which is believed to have been the site of the coronation of seven Anglo-Saxon kings. It is now located next to the Guildhall in Kingston upon Thames, and is next to the Hogsmill River.

Seven Anglo-Saxon kings were crowned at Kingston. Edward the Elder, son of Alfred the Great (900), Athelstan (925) Edmund (940) Edred (946) Edwy (956) Edward the Martyr (975) and Ethelred II (979). A silver penny of the reign of each of these kings was set into the plinth of the stone, probably in 1850.

( They didn't seem to last very long as King in those days - must have been very stressful : )
