In de jaren dertig van de vorige eeuw liep de vraag naar de traditionele kunst door de vorsten af. Maar tegelijkertijd ontstond er een nieuwe afzetmarkt: het toerisme. De moderne schilderkunst ontstond om te voldoen aan de vraag en de smaak van de toerist. De permanente aanwezigheid van buitenlandse kunstenaars had ook zijn invloed op de moderne Indonesische kunst. Deze kunstenaars introduceerden nieuwe materialen als doek en olieverf. De invloed van de buitenlandse stijl is te zien door: aandacht voor mens en natuur, anatomie en het gebruik van schaduw en licht. De onderwerpen in de moderne schilderijen zijn afkomstig uit het dagelijks leven, maar ook historische gebeurtenissen. Daarnaast bleef het afbeelden van de Hindoeïstische heldendichten en volksverhalen populair. Op deze tekening is een voorstelling van de Ramayana-cyclus te zien..
