| Description |
Nederlands: Negatief. 'De dagelijksche beheering der zaken op Java wordt waargenomen door Residenten', aldus het Staatsblad van Nederlandsch-Indië van 1818, No.85. De Resident was gedurende een groot deel van de 19e eeuw een zeer machtig man, een vorst in zijn koninkrijkje. Hij stond rechtstreeks onder de Gouverneur-Generaal en moest in principe diens bevelen uiteraard gehoorzamen, maar in deze tijd van trage communicatie kon hij toch in hoge mate zijn gang gaan. Als er na 1870 echter steeds meer gespecialiseerde centrale diensten komen (Boswezen, Irrigatie, enz.) neemt zijn macht af. In de Nederlandse literatuur treden twee bekende Residenten op, namelijk Resident Slymering in Multatuli's Max Havelaar en Resident Oudijck in Stille Kracht van Louis Couperus. (P. Boomgaard, 2001).
