Summary[edit]

Description
English: Portrait of two Dayak women
Nederlands: Negatief. (P. Boomgaard, 2001). Portret van twee Iban vrouwen
English: 'Mongolian and Javanese types of Dayak women'. Commentary by P. Boomgard, 2001: "The original caption, cited here, shows that the interest of the photographer was not in the fantastic dresses of these women, but rather their face types. It is, by the way, very well possible that Dayaks had Chinese or Javanese ancestors, as both Chinese and Javanese people had came to Borneo for centuries and found large influence at the various Sultanates. In the self-governed Sultanate Sambas, in Borneo's Westerafdeeling (today's West Kalimantan), the presence of the Chinese was of great importance. The rotan 'girdle' is the most intriguing piece of clothing in this image by the way."
