Description
Nederlands: Masker. Dit opzetmasker zou toebehoord hebben aan een priester van Zuid Nias. Een keer in de zeven jaar riep hij alle hoofden en hun lieden samen voor een verzoeningsceremonie, föndrako genaamd, die zeven dagen duurde. In deze bijeenkomst werd een een wapenstilstand in acht genomen en de geschillen beslecht. Tijdens een speciale ceremonie zette de koning priester dit masker op. Het was zijn tweede gezicht, waarmee hij kon communiceren met de geestenwereld. Iedereen luisterde wat de priester dan te zeggen had. De kroon stelt de levensboom voor.


Ceremonies were held every seven or fourteen years in the vincinity of the fösi tree and the temples. The purpose was to re-affirm the laws, settle disputes and put things in order for the living society and the ancestors.......At the end of the ceremony he ( the priest ) would recite phrases sanctifying the laws of the society, temporarily suspended during the ceremony, as permanent. The words "me kara lo (o met trema) tebulo bulo" meaning "because rocks never change" affirm the immutability of the laws" (Feldman et al, 1990). Opzetmasker van een priester
