DescriptionCOLLECTIE TROPENMUSEUM Olieverfschilderij voorstellende Javaanse gamelanspelers TMnr 339-1.jpg |
Nederlands: Olieverfschilderij.
Javaanse gamelanspelers
Bahasa Indonesia: Lukisan cat minyak.
Pemain gamelan Jawa
English: Oil painting. In the East Indies, Israëls visited Batavia (Jakarta), Buitenzorg (Bogor), Yogyakarta and the Borobudur. He also spent some time in Solo at the court of the Mangkunegara, where he had been introduced by the dancer Raden Mas Yojana, whom he had met in the Netherlands. He also visited Bali with the Veth family. On the whole, he did not like Indonesia very much. He visited it because so many others had gone before him. He was therefore happy to be back in the Netherlands. "After all, the Netherlands is a country where you can best indulge yourself creatively, because there is never anything distracting and nothing ever happens." When asked what had impressed him most in Java, his answer was, "That I could tolerate the climate so well."
The group pictured here depicts a small orchestra, playing in only one key, pelog or selendro. They appear to be neatly dressed, suggesting that this is a group in the service of a prominent person. Javanese gamelan players |
