Nederlands: Repronegatief. Naast rijst werden ook maïs en cassave, twee gewassen oorspronkelijk afkomstig uit Zuid-Amerika, veel op Java verbouwd. Cassave werd in de armere streken van Java veel aangeplant voor eigen consumptie, maar het werd ook als huisindustrie in de dorpen tot meel verwerkt ('kampongmeel') voor de opkoop door tussenhandelaren. Daarnaast werden de wortels opgekocht voor de fabrieksmatige productie van cassavemeel. De meeste fabrieken, waaronder tamelijk grote, waren in handen van Chinezen. De cassave werd doorgaans geschild aan de fabriek geleverd, waarna de wortels worden gewassen en geraspt. De aldus ontstane zetmeelbrij wordt gezeefd, waarna het meel bezinkt en vervolgens wordt gecentrifugeerd en gedroogd. Een groot deel van het meel werd uitgevoerd naar de VS en Europa, vooral voor gebruik in de textielindustrie. (P. Boomgaard, 2001). Mannen leveren manden met geschilde cassavewortels aan Cassave.
