Nederlands: De tweede man van rechts draagt een herdenkingsdoek met een afbeelding van de Keniaanse president Jomo Kenyatta (20-10-1893 - 22-8-1978). In 1963 won Kenyatta met zijn partij de Kenya African National Union (KANU) de verkiezingen en werd hij minister-president. Hij startte gesprekken met de Britten en probeerde via diplomatieke weg de Keniaanse onafhankelijk te bewerkstelligen. Op 12 december 1963 werd Kenia onafhankelijk verklaard en in 1964 trad zij toe als Republiek tot het Britse Gemenebest. Het cijfer '12' dat telkens terugkeert op de doek verwijst naar de datum van onafhankelijkheid.
De opname is gemaakt in Kapenguria. In deze stad staat de gevangenis waar Kenyatta in 1953 gevangen heeft gezeten voor zijn rol in de Mau Mau beweging. In het gebouw is sinds 1993 een museum gevestigd (SW, 2009). |
