Nederlands: Foto. Deze foto is gemaakt tijdens de Commissiereis naar Centraal-Borneo van A.W. Nieuwenhuis.
Het kappen van (hard)hout voor de uitvoer was vóór 1942 weliswaar geen grootschalige activiteit, maar het kwam wel voor. Verder werden er veel bomen geveld voor de zwerflandbouw. Het hout ging daarbij veelal verloren. Het ging in rook op of men liet het wegrotten, omdat transport naar de rivier niet lonend was. Er werden natuurlijk ook bomen gekapt voor de bouw van de grote longhouses, waarvoor veel en degelijk hout (ijzerhout) nodig was. Verder werd er veel hout als brandhout gebruikt. Tenslotte werd er ook veel goed hout gebruikt voor het maken van lokale boten (perahu), Borneo's belangrijkste verkeersmiddel. Op de foto zien we Kajans aan het werk. (P. Boomgaard, 2001).
