Nederlands: De Luba-zetels die gebruikt worden als troon worden vaak ondersteund door een vrouwenfiguur (i.e. karyatide), dit bijzondere exemplaar wordt echter door een man gedragen.
Zetels zijn 'plaatsen van geheugen', zij situeren macht en geheugen in het verleden en de toekomst. Hun subtiele iconografie kan gelezen worden als een gebeeldhouwd verhaal. Zetels dienen ook als een soort geheugensteun die door de bevolking gebruikt wordt om te onthouden wat goed en roemrijk is. Een zetel kan beschouwd worden als een 'kitenta' of een 'geestelijke hoofdstad' een plaats die de chief en zijn onderdanen aan de voorouders en andere geesten verbindt en die probeert het dagelijks leven te leiden, besturen. Deze zetels zijn daarom ook niet bedoeld om op te zitten, behalve dan bij grote uitzondering, bijvoorbeeld wanneer een chief of koning zijn positie als onschendbare intermediair tussen werelden wil demonstreren (Phillips 1995: 292). De stoel is één van de voornaamste machtssymbolen van het Luba-koninkrijk. Zeldzaam is dat hier een mannenfiguur is afgebeeld, vaker komen vrouwenfiguren voor, voorouders, die de continuiteit van de macht en vruchtbaarheid symboliseren. Ze worden alleen tijdens belangrijke bijeenkomsten gebruikt, en verder bewaard door een hooggeplaatste vrouw in de familie van de notabele. Dat de Luba van matrilineaal naar patrilineaal zijn overgegaan, kan dit verklaren. |
