Nederlands: Het wrijforakel wordt gebruikt door lokale geneesheren (medicijnmannen) voor waarzeggen en schuldkwesties. Wanneer twee personen een geschil hebben wordt het orakel geraadpleegd. Hiervoor moeten beide personen aan de eigen kant van de handgreep trekken. Degene die het hardst trekt (geholpen door bovennatuurlijke krachten) heeft gelijk.
Tijdens het waarzeggen roept de geneesheer de geest op die hij consulteert. Zijn cliënt en hij houden het orakel met één of meerdere vingers vast. De waarzegger stelt een aantal vragen waarop alleen met ja of nee geantwoord kan worden. Het antwoord is bevestigend als het orakel concentrische bewegingen maakt. Het antwoord is negatief als het orakel heen en weer beweegt waarbij het hoofd de mat kan raken (Beumers 1992: 325) In andere literatuur is de reactie van het orakel op nee of bevestigend precies omgekeerd. In ieder geval is de onderkant van dit orakel gladgewreven door het vele heen en weer gaan over een mat of de grond. De figuur aan de bovenzijde bestaat altijd uit een vrouwenhoofd. |
