Nederlands: Het masker diende waarschijnlijk als dansmasker, maar de literatuur is niet volkomen duidelijk over de functie en exact welke rol de maskers in de Samo gemeenschap innemen. Skougstad brengt Samo maskers in verband (vooral op grond van stijl) met de maskers van de Gurunsi en Bwa (1978: 15-23). Zie ter vergelijking fig. 10, 11 en 12.
Echter, " the uses of masks among these groups is even less documented" (1978: 23). Fortes vermeldt dat maskers gebruikt worden door de meest zuidelijk gelegen groeperingen van de Samo (de zgn "maka"), deze maskers zouden echter vezelmaskers zijn (1967: 127). De Brochure Boven Volta schrijft in het kort: "The Samo belong to the ethnic group Mande. Their masks and statuettes have another artistic form compared to their neighbours and they are not well-known" (1982: p. 23) |
