Nederlands: Foto. In 1930 telde Celebes maar twee steden met meer dan 20.000 inwoners, namelijk Makassar en Manado. De eerste plaats ligt in het uiterste zuidwesten van het eiland, de laatste in het uiterste noordoosten. Manado was duidelijk de kleinste van de twee en had in 1920 de 20.000-grens zelfs nog niet gehaald. In 1930 telde de stad ongeveer 27.500 inwoners, van wie niet minder dan 5.500 Chinezen waren. Er waren maar zo'n 1.400 Europeanen. De foto suggereert dat de stad in feite een wat groot uitgevallen kampong was en dat klopt wel met de gegeven cijfers. (P. Boomgaard, 2001). Gezicht over Menado |
