English: A Mamasa Toraja head of a district with his family for their adat house in Orabua
Nederlands: Repronegatief. De waterbuffel (karbouw) speelde een grote rol in het sociale en religieuze leven van de Toradja's. Ze werden echter nauwelijks als ploegdieren gebruikt (in de jaren zeventig van de 20e eeuw was dat toegenomen), de mest werd niet gebruikt en de melk van buffels werd alleen plaatselijk gedronken. De waterbuffel is in feite vooral een statussymbool, bij het leven en na de dood van de bezitters. Ze werden geslacht bij het dodenritueel en er werden buffelgevechten gehouden. Op de foto sieren de koppen van geofferde buffels de staander voor het adathuis (tongkonan) van een districtshoofd en zijn familie. (P. Boomgaard, 2001).
