Nederlands: Repronegatief. Met het oprichten van desa- of dorpsschooltjes was in 1907 een begin gemaakt. Vlak voor de Tweede Wereldoorlog waren er in heel Indië ruim 17.000 van dit soort volksscholen met meer dan 1,8 miljoen leerlingen. In het geheel namen bijna 2,2 miljoen Indonesische leerlingen deel aan het lager onderwijs, van wie bijna 85.000 in 'Westerse' lagere scholen. Die getallen zien er echter mooier uit dan ze in werkelijkheid zijn. Veel kinderen verlieten de school namelijk voortijdig. De school op de foto was een school voor jongens en meisjes. Er kwamen ook speciale meisjesscholen, omdat er in sommige Indonesische kringen bezwaren bestonden tegen deze vorm van gemengd onderwijs. De eerste meisjeskweekschool werd in 1918 gestart. (P.
