| Description |
Nederlands: Negatief. Net als koffie, thee, cacao en kina was ook tabak een nieuwkomer in de Archipel. In de 17e eeuw werd hier en daar al tabak verbouwd, maar de VOC had er geen belangstelling voor. In de 19e eeuw was het een belangrijk bevolkingsgewas, maar als gedwongen cultuur onder het Cultuurstelsel mislukt het. Na 1870 wordt tabak op Java vooral belangrijk in de Vorstenlanden van Midden-Java, waar het geteeld werd door Europese ondernemers, en in Oost-Java, waar de Javaanse boeren het zowel verbouwden voor Westerse ondernemers als voor de inheemse markt.
