| Description |
English: BNL BNP Paribas Group Collection.
Docimian marble, recreated parts in Carrara marble. The bust was reassembled in modern times from the remains of an ancient statue. The face has been reconstructed, as has the front part o the hair, the original part of which is treated in a free and lively manner. Aphrodite's figure is full and soft. We can tell from the movement of the shoulders that the arms clung to the body, with the right one, more forward, placing its hand in-front of the breast. The statue is certainly identified as Aphrodite, nude and captured in the act of covering her breasts and pubis, in reference to the iconogrpahy of the so-called modest Aphrodite. A Roman work from the 1st Cnetury AD, the statue derives from models dating from the second half of the 4th Century BC. |
