A NEW WINTER CABBAGE FOR 1893. NOW KNOWN AS IVIAIN-CROP CABBAGE NO. 28. It is now fifteen years since we introduced the famous BURPEE'S SUREHEAD, and seven years since the introduction of Burpee's Short-Stem Drumhead Cabbage. In all this time no new variety has appeared that could compete with these two in popular favor for Main-Crop or Winter Cabbage. We have tried many highly-lauded strains, but, until the past year, have found none that we considered worthy of introduction to compete ' in the field so well occupied by the Surehead and Short-Stem Drumhead. ' At last we have secured a JIarket Gardeners' Cabbage that is likely to prove a rival to the two cabbages named above, and may in some sections be preferred to either. This New < MAIN-CROP CABBAG-E No. 28 is well depicted in the small illustration above, which : has been accurately engraved from three heads in the foreground of a photograph taken from the field of cabbages from which our seed was grown. It is a large, late strain, very sure to head ;—the heads are of large size, hard and solid as they can be, and keep well. Jl^"" In order that Cabbage No. 28 may have a thorough trial throughout the country, we have papered 75,000 sample packets and will be pleased to send a packet FREE, for trial, to every purchaser of Burpee's Surehead or Short-Stem Drumhead who asks for it. Every one who tries this Cabbage is requested to compete for $200.00 IN CASH PRIZES FOR 1892. 4Si=' We will pay $50.00 CASH to the grower who raises this season the heaviest and best head of Xo. 28 Cabbage ; $25.00 to the grower of the second heaviest and best head : $15 00 to the grower of the third heaviest and best, and $10.00 for the fourth heaviest and best head of No. 28 CABBAGE. 4^ We will also pay $50,00 CASH for the most appropriate NAME suggested by any of our customers. We will also p«y $50 00 CASH for the best description of No. 28 Cabbage written by any one of oui customers who has tested it in comparison with one or riiore other late Cabbages. -^§=" All reports competing for the prizes must be received during the month of October, 1892, and we reserve the right to order the prize-winning- heads of Cabbage sent to us, so as to verify the weights and note the perfection of form. With each report must be returned the printed label from the seed packet, showing that the party competing has actually tried Xo. 28 Cabbage. Our checks for the amounts will be mailed to the successful competitors early in November, 1892. Five Cabbages of Our Own Introduction. BURPEE'S SUREHEAD, ) Each at loc. per pkt.; BURPEE'S ALL-HEAD EARLY, ACME FLAT DUTCH, I 3 pkts. for ^25 cts.; or BURPEE'S WORLD BEATER. SHORT-STEM DRUMHEAD, J 15 pkts. $1.00, by mail. Each of the above at 15 cts. per pkt.; ; 2 pkts, 25 cts.; 10 pkts. $1.00, by mail. The five Cabbages named above and fully described on the preceding pages of this Catalogue are the best of their class.—sure to head, hard and solid, ^'ith a uniformity to satisfy the most critical gardeners. Being of our own introduction, we naturally desire to have them widely known throughout the country, and therefore^ in order to induce our friends to persuade their neighbors to use these Cabbages, we make the unusual offer $250.00 IN CASH PRIZES FOR CLUB ORDERS to be awarded as follows :—To the customer who will get up the largest club for packets of these five varieties of Cab- baore, between the first of .Tanuarv and the first of June. 1892, we will pay $100.00 CASH ; for the second largest club we will pay $50.00 CASH "and fos the next ten largest clubs $10.00 Cash, to tfy petter vp of eacti chih. Orders for packets can be assorted as desirpd among these five varieties, at the prices named above, and can be sent in at any time during the season. All who intend to compete for these prizes should so state on their orders, so that we can retain an accurate record of the number of packets purchased. Each competitor should also, in order to prevent anv mistakes, retain a memorandum of the date of his orders and the number of packets purchased at each order, so that he can write us on the first of .June. 1892, giving this data, which will then be verified by our books. As soon as the totals are footed up. earlv in .Tune, 1892. our checks will be mailed to the successful club raisers. We would here -tate that it is quite likelv that the first and second prizes will be paid for clubs in which the total value of the packets purchased will scarcelv equal the amount of the prize. We know, however, as stated on page 4:^, that BURPEE'S CABBAGE SEED is the BEST it is possible to produce, and we are anxious that these varieties should become known as the standard for uniformity of sure-heading and hard-heading Cabbages.
