Summary[edit]

Description The U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CV-6) steams past the burning wreckage of two Japanese Aichi D3A dive bombers during the Battle of the Eastern Solomons, 24 August 1942. The two bombers and their bombs barely missed the ship. The photo was taken by Photographer's Mate Robert F. Read who was killed shortly after taking this photo by the second bomb to hit the "Big E".
