Summary[edit]
DescriptionBurgh House in New End Square - geograph.org.uk - 674944.jpg |
English: Burgh House in New End Square This beautiful old house, built in 1704, has a fascinating history having passed through many hands including the first physician of the Hampstead Wells spa, an upholsterer who was fined for having a dungheap in the garden, an unpopular local vicar, the Royal East Middlesex Militia, a notable stained glass designer, an international art expert and Rudyard's Kipling's daughter. It survived WW2 unharmed but began to fall into decay. Local people formed a charitable trust to raise money to buy the lease from Camden Council who restored the building and it was re-opened in 1979 as a museum and educational facility providing a programme of talks, recitals and exhibitions, a cafe and a wedding venue with a delightful garden too. A really lovely place to visit and free of charge.
