Deutsch: Blick auf das Marienviertel in Berlin (Ost); im Zentrum links die evangelische St.-Marien-Kirche, links davor der Neue Markt; in der Mitte am unteren Bildrand die Einmündung des Hohen Steinwegs in die Bischofstraße, mit den erhaltenen Häusern Nr. 25 (rechte, südöstliche Straßenseite) und schräg gegenüber Nr. 6-8 (durch Otto Dibelius am 24. Juni 1956 als Propst-Grüber-Haus eingeweiht), Sitz Heinrich Grübers, des Generalbevollmächtigter des Rates der Evangelischen Kirche in Deutschland (EKD) beim Ministerrat der DDR; Oberhalb des Propst-Grüber-Hauses sind noch zwei sich gegenüber stehende Häuser an der Kalandsgasse zu erkennen, dahinter die beiden flachen Bauten der Zentralmarkthalle. Rechts der Häuser an der Kalandsgasse sind die Anfänge des Baus des Berliner Fernsehturms zu erkennen. Rechts der Baustelle steht das Statistische Zentralamt der DDR (an der Klosterstraße), etwas oberhalb davon der Bahnhof Alexanderplatz. Außer dem Bahnhof und der Kirche wurden in der Folge alle genannten Gebäude und Straßen im Marienviertel beseitigt.
English: View from the tower of Rotes Rathaus:. In the centre right the Protestant St. Mary's Church, left in front of it the Neuer Markt (new market square). In the middle of the lower edge Hoher Steinweg street ends in a T-junction at Bischofstraße street with its houses No. 25 (right, southeastern side of the street) and No. 6-8 diagonally on the opposite side, some of the few houses in the quarter of Marienviertel (East Berlin) not destroyed in World War II. Bischofstraße 6-8 housed the seat of Heinrich Grüber, the plenipotentiary of the Council of the Protestant umbrella Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) at the government of the East German Democratic Republic (GDR). On 24 June 1956 Bishop Otto Dibelius named the building in Bischofstraße 6-8 as Provost Grüber House in honour of Grüber. Above the Provost Grüber House there two other remaining houses standing face to face in the tiny street Kalandsgasse. Behind them there are the flat halls of the Central Market Hall. Right of the houses in Kalandsgasse one can see the beginning of excavations for Berlin's TV tower. Right of the construction site stands the Statistical Central Office of the GDR (in then Klosterstraße), somewhat behind that there is the long hall of Bahnhof Alexanderplatz station. Except of the church and the station all mentioned buildings and streets have completely been demolished in the years until 1970. |
