For documentary purposes the German Federal Archive often retained the original image captions, which may be erroneous, biased, obsolete or politically extreme.
Berlin, Alexanderplatz, Rathausstraße, Rotes Rathaus ADN-ZB Quaschinskyinsky-23.20.84- Berlin: Alexanderplatz. Bis in das 19. Jahrhundert war er ein Vieh- und Wollmarkt mit anschließendem Exerzierplatz, einer der unregelmässig gewachsenen Plätze or den Toren der Stadt. Im 20. Jahrhundert entwickelte er sich zu einem der zentralen Plätze im Zentrum Berlins. Seinen Namen bekam er 1905 aus Anlaß des Besuches von Zar Alexander II. 1945 war der "Alex" als Folge des 2. Weltkrieges ein trümmerfeld. 1964 beschloß der Magistrat die grundlegende Umgestaltung des Platzes zu einem Forum für Fußgänger mit prägnanter Silhouette im Herzen der Stadt Berlin. Im Hintergrund des Rote Rathaus, der Sitz des Oberbürgermeisters und des Magistrats.
