Fine quality fruit. DESCRIPTIVE NOTES. In addition to the performance-record notes, detailed descriptionsare made of representative trees and fruits of the different strainsand variations in the orchard. Specially prepared forms are usedin securing these data, so that all the records obtained will be com-parable and arranged in the same sequence for the purpose of intelli-gent study. These systematic notes are particularly valuable ininterpreting the behavior of the individual trees and in obtaininginformation concerning the correlations of production and thephysical characteristics of the individual trees and fruits. 14 BULLETIN 623, U. The trees of the Washington strain, illustrated in figures 3 and 4before and after the crop was picked, are productive and tend tobear regular and successive crops of fruit. They have an openand somewhat drooping habit of growth and dense foliage with large

The trees of this strain produce but few suckers,i. e., branches showing abnormally vigorous vegetative growth incontrast with the large amount of such growth produced by treesof some other strains of the Washington Navel orange. Fruit varia-tions are less commonly found in the trees of this strain than in the BUD VARIATION IN THE WASHINGTON NAVEL ORANGE. 15 trees of the other strains of this variety (see fig. 14).
