, and suggestedthat it might be agreeable for us to happen in there aboutthat time and enjoy a good, square meal. We gladly acceptedthe tempting suggestion, and promised faithfully not tobetray him. The morning was passed in scouting- aroundSummit Point in quest of an opening for a raid, and wearrived at Mr. Butchers a little after the appointed hour, andfound the neighbors, including our friend, seated at the tableenjoying a royal feast. We were invited, of course, to par-take, and with as much modesty and surprise as we couldassume, accepted. The Federal cavalry were in the dailyhabit of making scouts in this neighborhood, and the hostand his guests were apprehensive lest we should be discoveredat the banquet and occasion the arrest and im)M-isonment ofthe whole party. This fear produced a very unappetizingeffect upon them all, except our friend, Mr. Castleman, whoseemed really to enjoy the situation and the discomfiture ofhis neighbors. Xear b) a field of corn was discovered, and we entered awoods adjoining, unbridled, gathered some corn and fed ourhorses. As we lolled around, waiting until our steeds finishedtheir feed, we noticed four cavalrymen riding in our directionup the road by the old McPherson Mill. At first view, judg-ing from their actions and manner of riding, Mason andmyself pronounced them Jesse Scouts (a name applied toYankees dressed in grey uniforms), but our comrade, wdiowas always inclined to the other side on every question,asserted they were our men. When they had approached,however, within 200 yards, Henderson was convinced thatMason and myself were correct, and we quickly proceeded tobridle our horses and prepare for action.
