Description

Bufo viridis wikispecies Bufo viridis

English: Female European Green Toad, Jordan.

The European Green Toad is a toad found in mainland Europe, Western and Central Asia, and Northern Africa. They live in many areas, including steppes, mountainous areas, semi-deserts, and urban areas. The spots on their backs are usually green to dark brown. Most toads have white or very lightly colored stomachs.

The toads eat a variety of invertebrates (insects etc.).

The European Green Toad has glands behind its neck that secrete a toxin when the toad is threatened. Female toads are larger than males and can lay 9,000 to 15,000 eggs at a time. They can reach a maximum size of 6 inches, but growth to this size is rare.

הקרפדה הירוקה היא מין נפוץ בישראל השייך למשפחת הקרפדיים. הקרפדות הירוקות יכולות להתקיים באזורי אקלים שונים. לכן תפוצתן רחבה (אירופה, אפריקה ואסיה). הקרפדה הירוקה ניזונה בעיקר מפרוקי רגליים יבשתיים.

לנקבות כתמים ירוקים ברורים ובולטים על רקע אפור בהיר ולזכר צבע אפור-ירוק או חום-ירוק. נוסף להבדלי הצבעים בין הזכר לנקבה, הנקבה גדולה מהזכר עד פי שניים. העור בגב מכוסה גבשושיות ובאצבעות הרגליים האחוריות קיים קרום שחיה. ליד האצבע הראשונה יש יבלת חפירה. הגפיים האחוריות גדולות וחזקות יותר מהגפיים הקדמיות.

פיה של הקרפדה חסר שיניים, והיא בולעת את מזונה בשלמותו. לצורכי הגנה, היא מפרישה ריר ארסי מבלוטות על העור ומשתי בלוטות מרכזיות הממוקמות מאחורי עיניה.
