HenriHymans, dans une notice sur le graveur Franck (Annuaire de lAcadémie royale pour 1888 , ont raconté les origii es de lécolede gravure. Les détails que nous donnons sont empruntés à ces notices. 324 BRUXELLES MODERNE. Versailles; enfin à une publication dun intérêt artistique très supérieur, les Galeriesde Florence, dont Alexandre Dumas écrivit le texte. Les mots Calamatla direxit etÉcole de Bruxelles figurent au bas des nombreuses et excellentes planches paruesdans ce splendide recueil.

Salon de 1848. Jean Portaels : La Sécheresse en Judée (Jadis au musée de Bruxelles,actuellement au musée de philadelphie.Daprès la lithographie de Billoin. Calamatta, résidant habituellement à Paris, sétait engagé à passer six moischaque année à Bruxelles. Pendant dix ans les choses marchèrent de cette manière ;mais un arrangement intervenu entre le gouvernement et la ville de Bruxelles réunitlécole de gravure à lAcadémie des Beaux-Arts. Calamatta reçut alors le titre deprofesseur de lAcadémie, titre auquel il joignit celui quil avait déjà de directeur delécole de gravure. Il habita dès lors lhôtel dans lequel lécole était installée (placedu Sablon). Il y avait rassemblé en amateur passionné un grand nombre dobjetsartistiques et de haute curiosité qui formaient un charmant petit musée.
