Summary[edit]

Description

Above the entrance gate, a covered passageway leads directly from the seigneury to the chapel. In the courtyard, the ensign with the crescent moon probably refers to the sin of intemperance, as the lords of Gruuthuse had the exclusive right to trade and levy taxes on a herbal mixture called Gruut, which was used before the introduction of hops to preserve beer.
