English: Union supporter C.A. Haun bidding his family goodbye before he was hanged by Confederate authorities in Knoxville, Tennessee, USA on December 11, 1861 at the outbreak of the U.S. Civil War (1861–1865). Haun had been accused of aiding in the burning of numerous railroad bridges in East Tennessee to cut Confederate supply lines a few weeks earlier. The engraving appears in William "Parson" Brownlow's book, Sketches of the Rise, Progress, and Decline of Secession. Brownlow had been confined with Haun at the Knoxville Jail. |
