English: Brown alpaca. One of a group of alpacas and one llama > 740515 who share this pasture. Alpacas are South American camelids and resemble small llamas, but llamas are considerably taller and heavier. Apart from their different sizes, llamas and alpacas can also be distinguished by the shape and size of their ears: alpacas have shorter and straight ears whereas the ears of llamas are banana-shaped. Alpacas are kept in herds at altitudes of 2300 to 5000 metres and are valued only for their fibre. They are not used as pack animals. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alpaca |
