He was succeeded by Padilla, a nativeof Rio de la Hacha, and a brave and practical seaman.Among those of the British who distinguished themselvesin this Venezuelan naval service were Chitty, Bingham,Noel, Cobham, and Russel. All these were in commandof warships of various kinds, but I have named them thuscurtly, being uncertain as to what precise rank they heldin a navy that was of necessity of a somewhat improvisedkind.
