Summary[edit]

Description
English: Brihadeshwara temple, also known as Raja Rajesware Temple or Big temple is located in Thanjavur (Tamil Nadu) in the delta of the Cauvery river and dedicated to lord Shiva.

This temple, built by the great Chola emperor, Raja Raja Chola I between 1003 and 1010 AD, is one of the best examples of Dravidian temple architecture. According to the inscriptions found on the temple, Kunjara Mallan Raja Raja Perumthachan was the engineer and architect of this famous temple.

Features of the temple: - The temple has the world's tallest vimanam (tower of height 198 ft) and its kumbam (ball like structure) weighs approximately 80 tonnes and is made out of a single rock. Till date there are debates going on as to how such a heavy stone was put at such height in those days when there were very little technological advancements. - The Nandi (sacred bull) at the entrance of the temple is carved out of a single rock and weighs around 20 tonnes. - The shiva lingam inside the temple is 3.7 metres tall. The linga was brought from river Narmada and established in the temple. It is said that when the linga was taken out of water it kept increasing in size and thus ‘Brihat- eeshwara’ ('Brihat' meaning big/lofty and 'Eeshwara ' meaning Lord Shiva).

A masterpiece of Dravidian architectural glory, the temple is also a part of UNESCO World Heritage Site as “Great Living Chola Temples”. It holds a position of prestige among temples of India. This temple is a reminder of past splendour and symbol of India's rich heritage and glory.
