People wanted him to serve a third term but he re-fused, and in 1877 started on a tour of the world. Hevisited Europe and Asia and was everywhere receivedwith honor,— as the guest of Queen Victoria, thekings of Italy, Portugal, Denmark, Sweden, the Czarof Russia, and other rulers. Having received royalhonors in many lands, he returned in 1880 to Cali-fornia where he had served thirty years before as anobscure young soldier. His last years were burdened by business misfor-tunes and physical suifering. He had invested hismoney in a banking business which failed and involvedhim in ruin. With poverty came illness, a painfulthroat disease Avhich was to end in death.
