Summary[edit]
DescriptionBridge to Nowhere (538561597).jpg |
When I heard that the Martin Luther King Bridge over the Appomattox River between Colonial Heights and Petersburg was slated to be replaced, I was really angry at first. I'd always thought of that bridge as a landmark, an enduring symbol of Petersburg's early 20th century bravado with its finely detailed concrete railings and extravagant lamp posts. Then the chunk that hooks it to Pocahontas sort of detached itself one night, and I decided I was kind of willing to concede it to the wrecking ball. I guess utility sometimes can be allowed to trump aesthetics and heritage, and at least they kept the lamp posts. Petersburg VA |
