| Description |
English: a cartoon of the mechanisms involved in inhalation and exhalation. During inhalation the diaphragm contracts pushing the abdominal organs down and outwards, causing the abdomen to bulge. The intercostal muscle contract to expand the rib cage. During exhalation all the muscles relax, and the thorax and abdomen return to their resting position |
