Notes Notes from Kloss, William, et al. Art in the White House: A Nation's Pride. Washington, D.C.: The White House Historical Association, 2008:
"Boys Crabbing . . . is a morning scene. Ranney's delicate palette of light blues, pink, lemon yellow, and mother or pearl (in the sails) forms the backdrop for the brown pier and the cohesive group of boys on it. The boys are . . . buttressed by the sails and given relief by the darker cloud mass that the sun has not yet dispersed. . . . [I]nterlocking diagonals and triangles [give] a geometric structure to the painting . . . . Ranney modifies this angular structure with softly modeled forms and soft circular shapes: a crab basket at the left; the dripping, drooping net, the round heads; the cloth-covered pan at the right."
