ore he comes out of the saloon. It is astonishing,however, how large a number even of little girls and boysten years old or less, walk boldly out of the front doorwith their pails. Almost every saloon has also its lineof ragged urchins, crouched on their hands and knees onthe stone doorstep, peering under the screen at thecrowd within. Occasionally, on gala Saturday nights, agroup of men will hold what is known as a beer racket.Each one contributes a sum of money, fifty cents, adollar, or sometimes more, to a saloon keeper, whoagrees to furnish all the beer they can drink. The partythen retires to a convenient neighborhood roof, andkeg after keg is sent up until the last drinker has suc-cumbed. Usually one or more boys may be found withthe group, overcome with drink. Little attention is paid by the neighborhood to drunk-enness, and among the boys themselves it is regarded asrather a joke for one of their number to become intoxi-cated.
