Notes Before Selwyn, first Anglican Bishop of New Zealand, returned to England he was presented with this testimonial document box. The fully carved canoe stern posts, bas (low) relief Maori-style carving, as well as the realistic depiction of a Kauri tree seed as a knob, are all reminders of place and his forthcoming departure. The inscription on brass plaque on side of box- "LISTS OF SIGNATURES TO THE ADDRESS PRESENTED TO THE BISHOP OF NEW ZEALAND BY THE COLONISTS ON THE () OCTOBER 1868"
