Summary[edit]

Description
English: Canting arms of Bowerman of Culm Davy and of Whitehall, both in the parish of Hemyock in Devon: Ermine, on a bend cotised sable three boar's heads couped or (Vivian, Lt.Col. J.L., (Ed.) The Visitations of the County of Devon: Comprising the Heralds' Visitations of 1531, 1564 & 1620, Exeter, 1895, p.108). The Bowerman family was not descended from Nicholas Bourman of Brooke in the Isle of Wight, by his wife Elizabeth Russell, a sister of John Russell, According to the Pursuivant Rouge of the Royal College of arms the visitation used to show the pedigree of Nicholas Bowerman to John Bowerman is wrong and not held in their archives. 1st Earl of Bedford (c.1485-1555)
According to the source heralds information held at the Royal College of Arms in London James Bowerman of Hemyock was awarded the crest. James was the son of John Bowerman who's wife was Joan Kirkham a merchant's daughter. James's brother, Canon of Wells, was William who was born around 1492. Nicholas was born in 1488 as defined by the escheator of Henry VII jurors who met to confirm the date of birth of Nicholas as 30 Sept 1488. This means Nicholas would have only been 4 yrs old when his grandson was born. Therefore there is doubt that Nicholas was not the father of John and was not the source of the Bowermans in Hemyock.
