C., Aug., 3.—Ninetowns on the Crows Nest branch ofthe -Canadian Pacific railroad havebeen wiped out, and many others arein danger of destruction by the fiercestbush fires ever known in EasternCanada. One hundred lives are kown to havebeen lost, 74 in Ferine alone; hun-dreds have been injured, and the mon-etary loss runs Into the millions. Both toe Canadian Pacific andGreat Northern railroads have beenbadly crippled in the territory affect-ed, and. as telegraphic communicationis almost entirely interrupted it is im-possible at this time to obtain definitefigures as to loss of life and property. The fire is raging in the Elko valley,the richest coal and lumber district inBritish Columbia. It is in the extremesoutheastern corner of the province,just north of the Montana state line.
